A Search for clusters at high redshift I .

چکیده
Radio, optical and X-ray observations of the powerful radio galaxy PKS 1138–262 at z = 2.156 have suggested that this galaxy is a massive galaxy in the center of a forming cluster. We have imaged 1138–262 and the surrounding 38 square arcminute field with the Very Large Telescopea in a broad band and a narrow band encompassing the redshifted Lyα emission. We detect 50 objects with rest equivalent width larger than 20 Å and a luminous, highly extended Lyα halo around 1138– 262. If the radio galaxy is at the center of a forming cluster, as observations at other wavelengths suggest, these objects are candidate Lyα emitting cluster galaxies.

We describe our preliminary results on a search for high-redshift (z > 0.5) galaxy clusters using near-infrared photometry obtained with the Omega camera at the 3.5m telescope at Calar Alto.
متن کاملX-ray Surveys of Distant Galaxy Clusters
I review recent observational progress in the search for and study of distant galaxy clusters in the X-ray band, with particular emphasis on the evolution of the abundance of X-ray clusters out to z ∼1. Several on-going deep X-ray surveys have led to the discovery of a sizeable population of clusters at z > 0.5 and have the sensitivity to detect clusters beyond redshift one. These surveys have ...
متن کاملBatch discovery of nine z ∼ 1 clusters using x - ray and K or R , z ′
We present results of an initial search for clusters of galaxies at z ∼ 1 and above, using data from 2.9 square degrees of XMM-Newton images. By selecting weak potentially extended X-ray sources with faint or no identifications in deep, ground-based optical imaging, we have constructed a starting sample of 19 high redshift cluster candidates. Near-IR and R, z imaging of these fields identified ...
متن کاملA New Method For Galaxy Cluster Detection I: The Algorithm
Numerous methods for finding clusters at moderate to high redshifts have been proposed in recent years, at wavelengths ranging from radio to X-rays. In this paper we describe a new method for detecting clusters in two-band optical/near-IR imaging data. The method relies upon the observation that all rich clusters, at all redshifts observed so far, appear to have a red sequence of early-type gal...
متن کاملDistant Galaxy Clusters Identified from Optical Background Fluctuations
We present the first high redshift (0.3 < z < 1.1) galaxy clusters found by systematically identifying optical low surface brightness fluctuations in the background sky. Using spectra obtained with the Keck telescope and I-band images from the Palomar 1.5m telescope, we conclude that at least eight of the ten candidates examined are high redshift galaxy clusters. The identification of such clus...
متن کاملA deep cluster survey in Chandra archival data. First results
I present the first results of a search for clusters of galaxies in Chandra ACIS pointed observations at high galactic latitude with exposure times larger than 10 ks. The survey is being carried out using the Voronoi Tessellation and Percolation technique, which is particularly suited for the detection and accurate quantification of extended and/or low surface brightness emission in X-ray imagi...
